Re: The never-ending story thread
Once upon a time, in a world of crazy, but very polite, pirates, they went looking for their Gold and Sanity. On their journey to Las Vegas and the penny slots, they came across a mysterious box. Inside the box they found twelve pieces of a broken treasure map. The map was mysterious because it was drawn on a magical skull. This skull was not human and looked almost like it was from a mythical animal,

Re: "wings"
The best I can figure is this.... the top wings are spread across, which the U.S. Airforce uses as their wing spread. The second wings point downward, which gives me no clue. I think any company manufacturing for the military would most likely mark the backs of their products. So, what it comes down to is this. I aint got a clue.

toned nickels.
Why do some nickels tone? I'm sure we all understand why the war nickels tone, but why do nickels without silver content tone? Some of the most beautiful toned coins I have ever seen are the toned Buffalo nickels. They can be breath-takingly beautiful.

Inspiration
Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each day to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked about their wives and children, their homes, their jobs, and everything else. Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate everything he saw outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world was broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water. children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room closed his eyes and pictured all the beauty. Days and weeks passed, until one morning the nurse arrived to bring the men water, only to find that the man near the window had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendant's to take his body away. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making him comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, the man propped himself up to take his first real look at the world outside. Slowly, painfully, he peeked over at the window. It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate to describe such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind, and perhaps he just wanted to encourage you. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness shared is doubled.

I aint breaking aggies here, but, I wish i could find a teddy roosevelt dime. P.S. techie girl says i am being a nudge, and says to just explain that it is not "teddy" but Franklin Delano Roosevelt on the dime. And we both think Teddy would have made a better image for the dime. This may be the only time in the history of coin forums that I can give a corrected answer. :-DO

Re: Renaissance Festival
Fantastic. Maybe they will let me joust. We have King Richard's Faire here in Massachusetts, but no coin press. The jousting tournament is very popular, and the two guys that joust are pretty good, even if they do "rig" the outcome. Everything is massively over-priced at these fairs, so I would recommend not going there overly hungry. I had a $12.00 bowl of soup, and got into an argument with the king. All in all, a good day.

There are enough pennies and nickels out there to sink the fleet. Since the advent of credit/debit cards, i think they are way overminting coins. No need to discontinue, just cut the numbers in half. Just my humble opinion

And of course my favorite, the challenge coin, It was once almost exclusively used by the branches of the military, but now is used by many different organizations. We are all collectors here, of many different collectibles, but most also collect coins. So, hats, tee shirts, challenge coins, bumper stickers, patches, coffee mugs. All good.

kentucky derby contest
This contest has a prize of some old original theater used movie memoribilia. I will post several different lots, and the winner can choose one lot. The rules are simple. There will be 20 horses entered in the Kentucky Derby. They will be wearing the numbers 1 through 20 . Everybody can pick one number, but only if that number has not been chosen. After all 20 numbers are chosen, anyone who hasn't entered can pick a number 1 through 20. If there are 2 different winners, I will give 2 different prizes. One to each winner. The first winner picks his or her lot first, in the event of 2 winners. You must pick your number by midnight Pacific time April 30th. Good luck to all. I will make sure to find some good stuff for you.

Re: Those travelling buyers.
The town I live in, Revere, Massachusetts, makes anybody that wants to do travel thru business in Revere, go through a permit hearing process at city hall. The "scam" guy gave his pitch very eloquently, showing his costs and expenses, etc. When he was finished, the council talked amongst themselves for about a minute. Their decision was that the travelling coin buyers could not and would not be allowed to do any business in Revere. The coin buyers argued their case a second time, at which point the councilman said no again. The council basically told them their buy prices were very low, and that they were not going to be allowed the chance to take advantage of Revere's needy citizens. It was one of the few times all the Revere politicians were unamimous in their vote.

Re: kentucky derby contest
Tremendous amount of info. A.P.Indy was an exception racehorse, and his bloodlines are impeccible. Allen Paulson, the owner and the reason for the initials A.P. was a great gentleman for the sport. A.P. Indy had a habit of keeping his head low while running. This is not normally considered a good thing, but it sure worked for him. He was the Rocky Marciano of racehorses. Head low, and slug away. Good luck on your choice of numbers, and also good luck to my old pal, Lisa. Keep em coming, plenty of numbers left. And since Joan has also picked #13, I will award a prize to both people if #13 wins. In the spirit of fair play.

Re: People are Buying Goods with Silver & Gold
I just read that they discovered a huge copper, silver, and gold deposit in Chile. 4 Billion pounds of copper. This may make copper cheap enough to start making copper coins again. Who would like to see a copper nickel? With an unusual design. Maybe put a coyote on it? Maybe a wolf? How about a pure copper dollar? State dollars? Animal dollars? The creative people at our Mint probably are working on this as I type it. Now,........ where did I put that bottle of Tequila? :animals-cat:

Good eye. The pre 1937 coins show the trident further from the body. In 1937 the trident [ weapon ] is pulled closer to the body. Also it looks like a lighthouse on the left side of the coin. The weapon gets closer, and the lighthouse is used to watch and warn. 1937 Europe, the beginning of the war.

Lobby Cards
Let me start by saying I am qualified to speak about lobby cards, with many years worth of knowledge, research, selling and buying etc. Now let me say that I am not an expert in any way, shape, or form. I consider Rudy Franchi, who has owned and operated retail movie memoribilia stores to be the foremost expert in the field. I got to know Rudy when he had two locations in Boston, and he has a depth of knowledge above any others I know of. He taught me in a roundabout way quite a bit about lobby cards. That being said, Bruce Herschonson is also a highly respected lobby card expert. there are others, but to me, these are the top two. The cards I sent to Jenny and Rigo were what I would call an example of 1950's lobby cards. Jenny asked if they are origonals or possibly reproductions. They are origonals. All my cards are origonals, varying in quality because these cards were set up outside the theater in a glass enclosure to stimulate the interest of people walking by. Reproduction cards should ALWAYS be listed as such. There are lobby cards and posters where only a very very few survive today. These are beyond the reach of the ordinary collector as they can command prices in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now, there are cards that are called Re-issue cards. A movie made in the 1940's might be sent back to the theaters in the 1950's. Rather than trying to find the origonal lobby cards to send off to the theater with the movie, they would simply have a company print up new lobby cards to match the movie. In my opinion, RealArt { a company that made the re-issue cards} was the best of the re-issued lobby cards. To view a large selection of pretty nice lobby cards { with prices } I would suggest FILM POSTERS.COM . This is not an endorsement of this company as I have never done business with them. It is just a good place to start to see some nice cards and maybe learn a bit. The prices are top end retail, but they do have cards I haven't seen elsewhere. Lobby cards are almost completely phased out of the movie game now. Some movies do have them, but the modern metroplex movies now seem to be going the movie posters only route. If anyone has a question about pre- 1960 lobby cards, I will be happy to answer it even if I have to dig deep to find any information that I dont already have. Kipper :handgestures-thumbup:

Re: help for coin hunting
I dont have any tips for you, but, I am also interested in getting opinions on which metal detectors { in the $500.00 range } are considered the best for newcomers to the game. I have posted this on several coin forums and it seems like not many coin people are into metal detecting. I dont trust metal detecting forums as it seems too many members there might be salesmen for a particular brand. I have some good areas near me, including a very crowded beach to metal detect, if and when i have done my due diligence. So far, I am leaning towards a Garretts 250. But I still want to do more research and get some more opinions. :animals-chickencatch:

Rather than do all that, and harm a legit coin, why dont you just buy A two face Harvey Dent replica coin. They are available for Batman fans for $17.95. They have a scratched and Peace face side, and the other side is the clean face side. You know that you flip the coin to determine whether you do the light thing or the dark thing. Re: Copper Pennies
This topic always fascinates me. The copper cent is no longer minted by the U.S. Mint for circulation. I think 1982 was the last year of the copper cent. I can understand hoarding the cents on many levels. Value of coin, value of the copper content, sentimentality etc. But what I have always wondered is this. If you round it off at 150 cents per pound, and stack up 100 pounds {15000 cents}, and decide to sell them as copper value at coppers current price of $3.30 a pound, then you will have turned $150.00 into $330.00 . This of course doesn't factor in things like a scrap buyer will not pay full copper price and will expect you to deliver it to him. Then how does he make sure all the cents are copper cents? This scenario has always baffled me. Anyone have any experience in this area, because Boston is not a major coin collecting city in the sense of hoarding copper cents. For every 100 or so cents I come across, about half are copper. I bet if i went bank to bank and bought up penny rolls I could come up with a ton of copper pretty quick. :auto-camptrailer:
